Iowa Permit to Carry Classes Online
If you are serious about carrying a firearm in Iowa for self protection then please consider seeking out and taking a thorough class. The free market system is great in that there are classes to meet nearly every lifestyle, need and budget. Not all classes are the same as many only meet the min. requirements and provide only basic information. At Hawkeye Firearms Instruction we go well above the state requirements on training towards the Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons (CCW). Our classes discuss the Iowa laws and justifiable use of force. Knowing when you can and cannot use a weapon for self protection is every bit as important as being proficient with that weapon. You can never learn to much on such a serious subject.
As always all of our scheduled classroom courses are $50 per person. Persons who already have a current 5 year Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons can get additional information by taking our class for $25 dollars. Also be sure to watch our course schedule for upcoming live fire shooting courses.

You don't know what you don't know
I continue to STILL hear so many rumors and information on the Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons and its application. Last week alone I again heard that carrying long guns wan't allowed, that you must use equal or like force when defending yourself (IE if they use a knife you have to use a knife) and believe it or not. (Drum roll please) the old drag em in the door or put a weapon in their hand BS is still alive and well. Not only is that very old and poor piece of advice still floating around but I will just say that it is being perpetuated by people who should definitely know better and we will just leave it at that.
Take a look at the Jay Rodney Lewis situation as an example of what can happen to you in some states when you defend yourself from an attacking felon: This man spent 112 days in jail because he couldn't make $225,000 bail. While in jail he was evicted from his apartment. All his possessions were left on the street where low life people took what they wanted. A jury deliberated just a few minutes to acquit him. Now he's homeless and trying to rebuild his life. You can do everything right and STILL loose everything.
If you plan on ever actually carrying your firearm or any weapon please consider taking a class that discusses the concept of the use of force. I say this not because I give classes but as an instructor and person I want people to be safe and legal as well!

Rep. Horbach’s Closing Remarks for the 2nd Amendment Debate

Rep. Horbach’s Closing Remarks for the 2nd Amendment Debate
Iowa House of Representatives
I am not the public face for Gun Rights in this body.
However, the task at hand today is not only about guns, it’s about freedom, the people of Iowa and the freedoms that make this country great….
DO NOT TAKE THIS TASK LIGHTLY! On a much different scale, we are taking on a similar task to our country’s founders.
Noah Webster – (dictionary Lexicographer) – said this –
“There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.” Does that describe me? Does that describe you? Are we the master of Iowan’s rights, promising to govern well, but making sure we remain the master of their rights? Or will we relinquish our “power to govern” and trade it for freedom for all?
An American patriot, Patrick Henry made a statement that summed up my position on Iowa’s Constitutional Amendment vote. He said:
“Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense?” Have we reached a point in society where we as legislators look out the windows of this capitol, we see our law abiding constituents, and we deem that they cannot handle the responsibility of the “intended” rights provided by this country’s founders? This issue is not about just guns.
I have the highest respect for our founding Fathers, their ability to speak and write amazes me every time I experience it. (The use of brevity should be a lesson to us). The entire second amendment only encompasses 27 words…
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
With this amendment, the US Constitution was demanding, not asking, demanding Congress, and now due to the McDonald ruling, lawmakers at the state or local levels too, shall NOT infringe upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
As I said earlier, Iowan’s are reasonable people. Your law abiding constituents will continue to make the right decisions every day, criminals will not. Do not judge the freedoms we seek today by the acts of those that commit crimes, REMEMBER the second amendment protects the good and offers no protection for evil. The intent of the 2nd amendment was to allow the people to protect themselves from an unknown evil…..the tyranny in government. The exact scenario we find ourselves in today.
The shot you fire today will not come from a gun, yet it has the power to be heard around the world…tyranny in government is our target, and freedom is our prize.
Finally, there is one symbol of this state that stands as a reminder to us EVERY day in the chambers. The Iowa Flag…..Drug through the mud and blood of battles around the world, it stands silent with no wind to open its fold. Hidden within are the words of our state motto:
“Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.”
Above all other issues of extreme importance, our forefathers left us with this one statement…Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain. We have the opportunity today to be the wind that lifts that flag for all to see.
Remember the statement by Noah Webster describing his fear of lawmakers…. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.” Let this vote be our response…
Mr. Webster, Iowa has no masters!

A little about me
I am an Iowa resident and have been an Instructor for 14 years. As one of the founding members of Iowa Carry (now Iowa Firearms Coalition) who helped bring "Shall Issue" to Iowa. Like so many Iowa boys, shooting and shooting sports were always a natural part of my life. Some of my earliest and best memories are of walking the fields with my family on the opening day of pheasant season. Buying a box of cartridges and shooting Dad’s .22 rifle on a lazy Sunday afternoon was just always something fun to do.
I am the owner and chief instructor at Hawkeye Firearms Instruction. Forming Hawkeye Firearms Instruction is simply an official continuation of my passion for helping others. I became an NRA Certified Instructor in 1999 and have been a shooting enthusiast for over 30 years. Having helped to found Iowa Carry and bring "shall issue" to Iowa, my commitment and involvement in helping people in the use and safety of firearms is unwavering.
Prior to starting my own business I worked in PC repair and printing and graphics design for over 18 years. I still dabble in technology and being a geek has served me well.
Enough about me but hopefully throughout this blog we can get to know one another better.
